It sits on the island of Hokkaido inside Akan Mashu National Park. This lake is a crater lake located inside a caldera. A caldera is the large hole left behind after a volcano erupts.

The lake is surrounded by very steep walls of rock. It is one of the deepest lakes in Japan. Many people call it the clearest lake in the whole world.

The water is famous for being incredibly clear. In 1931, scientists measured how far light could travel through the water. They found it was very deep and clear. This measurement is why people compare it to Lake Baikal. Since the 1950s, the clarity has stayed between 24 and 27 meters. Some things have changed the water over time. People introduced sockeye salmon and rainbow trout to the lake. Landslides have also changed how clear the water looks.

This lake was made by powerful volcanoes a long time ago. The Mashū caldera formed less than 32,000 years ago. A big eruption happened about 7,000 years ago to create the caldera. The last big eruption was about 2,000 years ago. It was a plinian eruption that dropped pumice over the area. This volcano has a very high rating for how much it can explode. Two volcanoes have even grown inside the lake itself. One is a lava dome called Kamuishu Island. The other is Mount Kamui, which is the highest point on the eastern shore.

The names for this place tell many stories. The Ainu people call it Kamuy-to, which means lake of the gods.

Another Ainu name was Kintan-kamuy-to, or lake of the mountain god. A researcher suggested the Japanese name came from the Ainu word for the lake of the gulls. Over time, people started using the name of the nearby peak. That peak is called Kamuinupuri, which means mountain of the gods. The Japanese name for the peak means scrubbed area mountain. These names show how different cultures have lived near the lake.

Life at the lake is very quiet and calm. There are no towns or houses along the shores. You cannot go down to the water's edge. The Ministry of the Environment says visitors must stay in observation towers. You can hike the Mashu-dake trail along the rim of the crater. This path goes through forests and grasslands for seven kilometers. It takes about three hours to hike one way. In the summer, thick fog often covers the water. This fog stays for about 100 days every year. This makes the lake feel very mysterious and special.
