Königssee

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Königssee is a beautiful natural lake in Germany. It sits in the state of Bavaria. You can find it in the Berchtesgadener Land district. The lake is very close to the Austrian border. Most of the water is inside the Berchtesgaden National Park. It is the third deepest lake in all of Germany.

This lake was formed a long time ago. Glaciers made it during the last ice age. It sits in a place called a Jurassic rift. The lake stretches from north to south. It is very narrow at its widest point. Tall mountains rise straight up from the water. These steep walls reach up to 1,800 meters. One famous group of mountains is the Watzmann massif.

People have wondered about the lake's name for years. Some think it means "king's lake." However, there were no Bavarian kings back then. The name might come from a man named Kuno. He was a local noble from long ago. In the past, the lake was called Kunigsee. A railway also served the lake from 1909 until 1965.

Visitors love the lake because the water is so clean. It is known as the cleanest lake in Germany. Because of this, only electric boats can use motors. You can also use rowing boats or pedal boats. The Bayerische Seenschifffahrt company runs boat tours. They stop at places like Seelände and St. Bartholomä. A long tour to Salet takes two hours.

There is a special sound at the Königssee. The tall rock walls create a clear echo. People often play a trumpet or flugelhorn on boats. The sound bounces back up to seven times. It can sound like seven people are playing. You can also see the St. Bartholomä church. It sits on a peninsula halfway down the shore.
