It is part of the Dartry Mountains in an area called "Yeats Country." The mountain has very steep sides and a flat top. This unique shape makes it stand out in the landscape. It is a protected site for its special geology. People often travel here to see its amazing views.

This mountain was shaped by huge glaciers during the last Ice Age.

Long ago, the area was a large, flat plateau. As the ice moved from the northeast to the southwest, it carved the mountain into its current form. The rocks here are made of limestone and mudstone. These layers formed in a shallow sea about 345 to 330 million years ago. You can find many fossils, like sea shells and coral, inside these rocks.

Many people visit the mountain for walking and hiking.

The south side is an easy walk because it has a gentle slope. There is even a paved path near the Glencar Waterfall. However, the north face is a very dangerous climb. High winds and storms from the Atlantic Ocean hit that side hard. From the top, you can see the coastal plain and the ocean. You can also try the Gortarowey Looped Walk to see the forest.

Special plants and animals live on the mountain. Some plants, like the fringed sandwort, might be 100,000 years old! These plants are Arctic-alpine species that like the cool air at high altitudes. You might see red-billed chough birds, which look like crows but have bright red bills. Other animals like foxes, hares, and badgers live nearby.

The mountain is a very important place for nature.

Benbulbin is also full of stories and history. It is the setting for many Irish legends about warriors like the Fianna. The famous poet W. B. Yeats wrote many poems about this place. He even wrote his final poem, "Under Ben Bulben," about this area. He is buried in a churchyard in the shadow of the mountain.
