The mountain sits near the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria. The border between Germany and Austria runs right over its western summit.

This means the mountain belongs to two different countries. To the north, the beautiful Eibsee lake sits at the foot of the mountain.

It is a place where moist air hits the mountains and causes heavy rain or snow. Sometimes, warm and dry air called Föhn blows from the south. This can make the winter temperatures feel unusually high.

One glacier, the Southern Schneeferner, lost its status as a glacier in 2022 because it shrank.

People have been exploring this mountain for a long time. Josef Naus was the first person to climb the peak on 27 August 1820.

He was helped by his assistant, Maier, and a guide named Johann Georg Tauschl. Today, there are three main paths to reach the top. One path goes through the Höllental valley to the northeast. Another path starts in the Reintal valley to the southeast. A third path goes over the Austrian Cirque from the west.

You can also find colorful flowers like the alpine poppy and the lady's slipper orchid.
