It sits between the Bern and Valais regions of Switzerland. This peak is part of a huge wall of mountains. This wall includes the Eiger and the Mönch mountains. Together, they create a very famous sight for the Swiss Plateau. The mountain is the third highest in the Bernese Alps.

The mountain has many different sides and features. The north face is extremely steep and looks down on the Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald valleys.

This side is very high above the valleys. On the southeast side, the mountain meets the Jungfraufirn ice. This ice helps feed the huge Aletsch Glacier to the south.

The Aletsch Glacier is part of the largest ice area in Europe. This area is now a protected World Heritage Site.

People first reached the summit in a very long journey. In 1811, the Meyer brothers reached the top.

They traveled with two hunters from Valais. They had to cross many high passes and glaciers to get there. It was a very difficult trip for that time. Another group reached the top in 1812. They had a hard time with bad weather during their trip. A woman named Emma Winkworth became the first woman to climb it in 1863.

Many people visit the mountain because of the Jungfrau Railway. This train was built in the early 20th century.

It connects Kleine Scheidegg to the Jungfraujoch. The Jungfraujoch is the low point between the Mönch and the Jungfrau. This railway makes the area a very popular place to visit. Before the train, the trip from the valleys was very long. Climbers even had to carry ladders to cross cracks in the ice.

The name Jungfrau likely comes from a place called Wengernalp. This is a meadow that faces the north side of the mountain.

Long ago, nuns from a monastery owned this land. Some people think the name comes from the snowy look of the peak. However, the source says the name comes from the meadow instead. The mountain remains a very important part of the Swiss landscape. It connects the high ice of the glaciers to the green valleys below.
