Kangchenjunga is a massive mountain in the Himalayas.

It is the third-highest mountain on Earth. The mountain sits right on the border of Nepal and India. Specifically, it lies between Koshi Province in Nepal and Sikkim state in India. The mountain is part of a large group of peaks called the Kangchenjunga Himal. This area is bounded by several rivers and mountain passes. For example, the Tamur River marks the western edge. The Teesta River sits to the east.

This huge mountain group is made of 16 different peaks.

The mountain is shaped like a giant cross. Its main ridge runs from the north-northeast to the south-southwest. This ridge acts as a watershed for many rivers. Four main glaciers spread out from the peak like rays. These glaciers flow toward the northeast, southeast, northwest, and southwest. The Zemu and Talung glaciers flow toward the Teesta River. The Yalung and Kangchen glaciers flow toward the Arun and Kosi rivers.

Many of these glaciers are covered in rocks and debris. Between 1958 and 1992, more than half of the glaciers studied had retreated. This change might be due to global warming.

People have long held this mountain in high regard. The name comes from Tibetan words. It means "the five treasures of the high snow."

The local Lhopo people believe the mountain holds special treasures. These include things like gold, salt, and medicine. They believe these treasures appear when the world is in trouble. Because of this, the mountain is considered sacred in Nepal and Sikkim. For a long time, people thought it was the highest mountain in the world. However, in 1849, the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India found that Mount Everest was taller. It was officially announced in 1856 that Kangchenjunga was the third-highest.

Climbing the mountain is a very difficult task. Joe Brown and George Band were the first to reach the top in 1955. They were part of a British expedition. Interestingly, they stopped just short of the very true summit. They did this to keep a promise to Tashi Namgyal. He was the ruler of the Kingdom of Sikkim. He wanted the top of the mountain to remain holy and untouched.

Today, climbing the Indian side is not allowed. The Indian government has banned expeditions to the mountain.

The area around the mountain is full of life. It is home to many different types of forests and meadows.

Many rare animals live in these protected lands. You might find a red panda or a snow leopard there. Other animals include the Asian black bear and the white-bellied musk deer. In 2016, the Khangchendzonga National Park became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This helps protect the beautiful plants and animals. The landscape is shared by Nepal, India, Bhutan, and China. It is a very important place for nature.
