Lhotse

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Lhotse is a truly giant mountain in the Himalayas. It is the fourth-highest mountain on our whole planet.

The main peak sits right on the border of China and Nepal. To the north, you will find Mount Everest. To the west, there is a mountain called Nuptse. Lhotse is part of a huge group of peaks called the Everest massif. Its name comes from the Tibetan language. It actually means "South Peak."

Climbing this mountain is a very big job. The main ridge has four different summits. The highest one is called Lhotse Main. The others are Lhotse Middle, Lhotse Central II, and Lhotse Shar.

Some parts are very steep and dangerous. The Lhotse Face is a massive wall of blue ice. Climbers must use ropes to pull themselves up this ice. They also climb past rocky areas named the Yellow Band and the Geneva Spur. The climb to the main peak often goes through a narrow path called the Reiss Couloir.

People have been trying to climb Lhotse for a long time. In 1955, a group called the International Himalayan Expedition tried to explore it. They had people from America, Austria, Switzerland, and Nepal. They even brought 200 local porters to help. They could not reach the top because the wind was too strong. Later, in 1956, two Swiss climbers named Ernst Reiss and Fritz Luchsinger became the first to reach the main summit.

Other peaks on the mountain were climbed later. For example, Lhotse Shar was first climbed in 1970 by two Austrians.

Many amazing things have happened on these slopes. In 1999, a climber named Soňa Vomáčková reached the top without using extra oxygen. This is a very hard thing to do. In 2001, a Russian team finally climbed Lhotse Middle. This spot had been the highest unclimbed point on Earth for a long time. Some climbers even try to do something called the "Double Crown." This means they climb Lhotse and then Everest in less than 24 hours.

Many people have reached the top, but about 20 climbers have died while trying.

Lhotse is connected to the world of famous mountains. It is one of the "eight-thousanders," which means it is over 8,000 meters high.

Because it sits so close to Everest, the two mountains are linked. Climbers often use the same paths to get to the high spots. The mountain is a place of great challenge and wonder. It shows how big and powerful the Earth can be. Even today, some parts like the North East Face have never been climbed.
