Shishapangma

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Shishapangma is a giant mountain in the world. It is the 14th highest mountain on Earth. This peak sits in south-central Tibet. It is very close to the border of Nepal. It is only five kilometers away from that border. Shishapangma is the highest peak in the Jugal Himal range. This range is part of the huge Himalayas. It is the only 8,000-meter peak located entirely within China.

The name of this mountain has many interesting stories. One geologist said the name means a grassy plain above a mountain range. Another story comes from the local Tibetan language. This story says the name means meat from animals that died naturally. It also mentions malt dregs left from making beer. Long ago, heavy snow killed many animals near the mountain. People had to eat only that meat and the malt dregs. Because of this, they named the mountain Shishapangma.

Climbers have worked hard to reach the top for a long time. A Chinese team led by Xǔ Jìng first climbed it on May 2, 1964. They used the Northern Route to reach the summit. This was the very last 8,000-meter mountain to be climbed. Since then, many people have tried to reach the peak. Some climbers use the North Route because it is easier. They can even drive a vehicle to the base camp at 5,306 meters.

There are many different ways to climb this mountain. The North Route goes across the northwest face. The southwest face is much harder and steeper. It has a slope that goes up at 50 degrees. Some climbers also try to reach the Central Peak. This peak is also higher than 8,000 meters. It sits about two hours of dangerous climbing away from the true summit. Because of this, some people argue about who really reached the top.

Even though it is called one of the easier high peaks, it is still dangerous. Thirty-one people have died while climbing Shishapangma. This includes climbers like Alex Lowe and Dave Bridges in 1999. In 2018, a climber named Boyan Petrov disappeared near Camp 3. Famous climbers like Ed Viesturs have visited this mountain too. He had to climb it again to prove he reached the true summit. This mountain remains a place of great wonder and serious challenge.
