It sits within the Gangdise Shan mountain range on the Tibetan Plateau. The mountain is located near where the borders of China, India, and Nepal meet. It rests close to two important lakes called Manasarovar and Rakshastal.

Manasarovar is a very special place because it is the highest freshwater lake in the world. This entire region is very important for water. Four major rivers start near the mountain: the Indus, the Sutlej, the Brahmaputra, and the Ghaghara. These rivers flow out to help many other places.

The mountain has a very long history of being special to people. Many different names are used to describe it. In Sanskrit, it is called Kailasa, which might mean "crystal."

Locally, people call it Gang Rinpoche, which means "snow jewel mountain." Another name is Gang Tise, meaning "mountain of ice or cool." The rocks of the mountain are very thick. They are made of conglomerate rocks that sit on a base of granite. Long ago, huge sheets of ice covered this entire area. These ice sheets only moved away about 10,000 years ago.

Mount Kailash is a sacred site for four different religions. These are Buddhism, Bon, Hinduism, and Jainism.

In Hinduism, the mountain is the home of the god Shiva. He is said to sit there in meditation with his family. For Buddhists, the mountain is a central part of their world view. They see it as a place of great spiritual power. The Bon religion also views the mountain as a holy center. Jains believe that a great teacher named Rishabhadeva reached a state of liberation here. Because it is so holy, the Chinese government does not allow anyone to climb to the top.

People travel from far away to visit the mountain on a pilgrimage. This journey is often called a yatra.

Many pilgrims walk in a circle around the mountain. This walk is a way to show respect. The pilgrimage routes are some of the oldest in the world. In the past, travel was sometimes blocked by wars or border changes. For example, the route from India was closed for many years after 1962. It reopened in 1981, and many people visit every year. Recently, the path was closed again due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but it opened back up in 2023.

Even though people visit, the environment around the mountain is fragile. The weather can be very dry from April to June.

Winters are very cold, and January is the coldest month of all. Scientists say the Tibetan Plateau is warming up faster than the rest of the world. This change makes the glaciers melt and the permafrost thaw. This can change how much water is available in the rivers. Because of more people and tourism, there is a lot of stress on the land. Groups are working hard to find ways to protect this special landscape for the future.
