These mountains sit north and west of the Taklamakan Desert. They also sit directly north of the Tarim Basin. The range stretches for about 2,900 kilometers starting from Tashkent, Uzbekistan. It crosses the borders of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and the Xinjiang Region in China. To the south, the mountains connect with the Pamir Mountains. To the north and east, they meet the Altai Mountains of Mongolia.

These mountains formed a long time ago during the Cenozoic era. They were made when the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates crashed into each other. This crash is part of the Himalayan orogenic belt. The mountains have many different parts and named ranges. Some parts include the Bogda Shan in the east. Other parts include the Kyrgyz Ala-Too and the Talas Alatau. In the center, the mountains split into an "eye" shape.

This eye has the large Issyk Kul Lake right in its middle.

People have found these mountains very special for a long time. In the religion of Tengrism, the mountains are considered sacred. The second highest peak is named Khan Tengri. This name can be translated as "Lord of the Spirits."

One of the first Europeans to study the area was Peter Semenov. He explored the mountains in the 1850s. He even changed his family name to refer to these mountains. Today, parts of the Tian Shan are protected World Heritage Sites.

There are many amazing facts about the heights and ice here. The highest peak is Jengish Chokusu, which is also called Victory Peak. It is shared by Kyrgyzstan and China. The second highest peak is Khan Tengri, which sits where Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and China meet. The mountains have many glaciers made of ice. Sadly, these glaciers are melting very fast. They have lost 5.4 billion tons of ice since 1961. This is nearly four times the global average for ice loss.

Nature is very busy in the Tian Shan. Many important plants first grew in these mountains. Tulips originated here before traveling to Turkey along the Silk Road. The ancestors of sweet apples also lived in this region.

Animals like bears, deer, and wild boar live in the forests. These animals help spread seeds to help the plants grow. Many rivers also start in the mountains. The Syr Darya, Ili River, and Tarim River all begin here.
