Issyk-Kul is a massive and beautiful lake in the Tian Shan mountains.

It is located in eastern Kyrgyzstan, near the border of Kazakhstan. This lake is truly special because it is an endorheic lake. This means it has no river flowing out of it. Instead, about 118 rivers and streams flow into it. The Jyrgalang and Tüp are the largest of these rivers. The lake is also the second-largest mountain lake in the world.

The lake has some very unique physical features. It sits at a high altitude in the mountains. Even though it is cold in the winter, the lake rarely freezes. This happens because the water is saline, which means it is salty. The salt level is about 0.6% compared to seawater.

The lake is also very deep. It is the eighth-deepest lake on Earth. Some scientists think the water filters deep underground into the Chu River. At the bottom, there are even special mineral deposits.

History has passed through this region for many centuries. The lake was once part of the Qing dynasty of China. Later, it was given to Russia through a treaty. Long ago, the lake was a stop on the Silk Road. This was a famous path for travelers moving between Europe and the Far East. A Chinese monk named Xuanzang even wrote about the lake in the 7th century.

In old records, people called it Temurtu-Nor, or "Iron Lake."

Many important things have happened near these waters. Historians believe the Black Death may have started near the lake. This was a serious sickness that spread across much of the world in the 14th century. Researchers found evidence of this in old cemeteries nearby.

Divers have also found lost history under the waves. They found the remains of an old settlement called Toru-Aygyr. An earthquake in the 15th century caused this town to sink. Divers even found very old gold coins and a bronze cauldron underwater.

Today, the lake is a place for nature and people. It is part of the Issyk-Kul Biosphere Reserve. Many different types of fish and birds live here. Some fish, like the Schmidt's dace, live only in this lake.
