Issyk-Kul is a massive endorheic lake in the Tian Shan mountains.

It sits in eastern Kyrgyzstan, just south of the border with Kazakhstan. An endorheic lake is a body of water with no surface outlet. While 118 rivers and streams flow into it, no river flows out. The largest of these incoming waters are the Jyrgalang and Tüp rivers. Some hydrologists believe the water filters deep underground into the Chu River. This unique system makes the lake a vital part of the regional geography.

The physical characteristics of Issyk-Kul are truly remarkable. It is the second-largest mountain lake in the world. It is also the eighth-deepest lake on Earth. The lake sits at a high altitude of 1,644 meters. This makes it the deepest lake whose deepest point stays above sea level. Despite the high elevation and cold winters, the lake rarely freezes. This is due to its high salinity, or salt content. The salinity is approximately 0.6%, which is much lower than the 3.5% found in seawater.

The landscape surrounding the water is defined by massive mountain ranges. The southern shore is dominated by the rugged Teskey Ala-Too Range. The northern shore is bordered by the Kungey Alatau mountains. These mountains create different water patterns for the lake. The northern slopes are long and send many streams into the lake. These streams often form large alluvial cones when they exit the mountains. In contrast, the southern slopes are shorter. The rivers rising there are smaller and often flow into the Tüp river instead.

History has shaped the identity of this region for centuries. Issyk-Kul was once part of the Qing dynasty of China. It was later ceded to Russia through the Treaty of Tarbagatai. For a long time, the lake served as a stopover on the Silk Road. This was a famous trade route connecting the Far East to Europe. In the 7th century, the Chinese Buddhist monk Xuanzang traveled past the lake. He recorded his observations in the "Great Tang Records on the Western Regions."

Researchers have also studied the lake's connection to major historical events. Many historians believe the Black Death originated near Issyk-Kul. This plague devastated Eurasia during the 14th century. In 2022, scientists analyzed genetic material from seven individuals in local cemeteries. They determined the plague was present in the area in 1338 or 1339. The disease likely traveled along trade routes via merchants and infested vermin. This shows how the lake's position as a transit hub had global consequences.

Underwater exploration has revealed even more about the area's past. Divers have located the remains of submerged settlements in shallow areas. One such settlement was Toru-Aygyr, founded in the 13th century. An earthquake in the 15th century caused this town to sink into the lake. Divers discovered a 14-acre Muslim cemetery and very old gold coins. They even found a bronze cauldron with advanced craftsmanship.

The lake is also a critical site for biodiversity and modern science. It is part of the Issyk-Kul Biosphere Reserve and a Ramsar site. The water contains many endemic species, which are animals found nowhere else. Four endemic fish species, including the Schmidt's dace, are now seriously endangered. Overfishing and invasive species like rainbow trout have caused fish numbers to decline.

Additionally, the lake's east end has been used by the Soviet and Russian Navies. They use the area to test submarine and torpedo technology. This makes the lake a site of both natural wonder and military significance.
