The geography of Kyrgyzstan is defined by its highly mountainous terrain. This rugged landscape historically created a sense of geographic isolation. However, the region served as a vital crossroads for several civilizations. It was a key part of the Silk Road, a major commercial network.

The Soviet government implemented major economic changes through five-year plans. These plans focused on industrialization and the collectivization of agriculture. This involved creating large farming systems called kolkhozes. These changes caused significant hardship for many original inhabitants. For example, Russian settlers acquired much of the best pasture land. This forced many Kyrgyz, Kazakh, and Turkmen nomads to settle on less productive soil. Between 1928 and 1932, these policies led to unrest and resistance.

Kyrgyzstan gained independence following the breakup of the Soviet Union. On August 31, 1991, the country declared its sovereignty.
