As one of six independent Turkic states, it holds a specific cultural identity in the region.

The physical landscape of Turkmenistan is dominated by the Karakum Desert. This vast desert covers most of the country's land area. Because so much land is desert, the nation is very sparsely populated. It is one of the least crowded nations on the Asian continent. Despite this low population, the country has over 7 million people. Ashgabat serves as the capital and the largest city in the nation.

Underneath the desert soil, Turkmenistan holds immense natural wealth. The country possesses the world's fifth-largest reserves of natural gas. This resource is a vital part of the national economy. The extraction of this gas involves complex systems, such as the platforms seen in the Caspian Sea.

Because of the scale of these reserves, many gas leaks occur throughout the region. From 1993 to 2019, the government provided electricity, water, and natural gas to citizens free of charge.

The history of the region is defined by movement and trade. For many centuries, Turkmenistan served as a thoroughfare for various empires and cultures. It was a key location on the Silk Road, an ancient network of trade routes. The city of Merv was once a massive oasis-city and a major center in the Islamic world.

The modern Turkmen people have roots in the Oghuz tribes. These Turkic-speaking groups migrated from Mongolia into Central Asia around the 8th century AD.

Political control of the territory has shifted many times over the centuries. In the 19th century, Russian forces began occupying the land. Following the Battle of Geok Tepe in 1881, the territory was annexed into the Russian Empire. In 1925, it became the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic, or Turkmen SSR, within the Soviet Union. A major tragedy occurred in 1948 when an earthquake hit Ashgabat. This disaster killed over 110,000 people, which was two-thirds of the city's population.

Turkmenistan gained independence following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. This change was formalized through a national referendum and the adoption of constitutional law on 27 October 1991. Since then, the country has been ruled by totalitarian regimes. Saparmurat Niyazov ruled from 1985 until his death in 2006. He was known as the "Head of the Turkmens" and held absolute power. After him, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow took office in 2007.

International observers often raise concerns regarding the political climate in Turkmenistan. The government is frequently criticized for its treatment of minorities. There are also reports of a lack of religious and press freedoms. The country often maintains a neutral position on international issues. It is a member of the United Nations and an observer state in the Organisation of Turkic States.
