It is a landlocked nation, which means it has no ocean coastline. Instead, it sits next to the Caspian Sea to the west. To the north, it shares borders with Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. To the south and southeast, it meets Iran and Afghanistan.

Much of this land is covered by the Karakum Desert. This makes Turkmenistan one of the most sparsely populated places in Asia.

The land holds a very important resource underground. Turkmenistan has the fifth-largest reserves of natural gas in the world.

This gas is a major part of the country's economy. Because there is so much gas, many leaks occur in the area. The country also uses this gas to provide electricity and water to its citizens. For a time, these services were even provided to people for free. The geography of the region has always shaped how people live there.

History has moved through this land for a very long time. Many different empires and cultures used Turkmenistan as a path.

One famous path was the Silk Road. Merv was once a huge oasis-city and a great stop on that road.

Long ago, Oghuz tribes moved into this area from Mongolia. These tribes formed the basis for the modern Turkmen people. They were known as a strong and independent group of people.

Turkmenistan has changed many times over the years. In 1881, the Russian Empire took control of the territory.

Later, it became a part of the Soviet Union in 1925. In 1948, a large earthquake hit the capital city of Ashgabat. This event killed over 110,000 people, which was two-thirds of the city's population. Finally, Turkmenistan became an independent nation in 1991. This happened after the Soviet Union broke apart.

Today, the country is led by a small group of people in power. Since 1991, it has been ruled by leaders with total control. Saparmurat Niyazov ruled for a long time until he died in 2006. He was followed by Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow in 2007. Now, his son Serdar Berdimuhamedow is the president.

Many international groups criticize the government. They say the leaders do not allow much freedom for religion or the news. This makes the political life of the country very strict.
