Soviet Central Asia was a large region within the Soviet Union.

It was part of a much larger area ruled by the Russian Empire. For a long time, Russian tsars controlled most of this land. This included places like the lands of the Turkmens and the Khanate of Khiva. The region was also known as Russian Turkestan.

It sat in a part of the world where many different cultures met. This made the area a very diverse place to live.

Between 1918 and 1991, the borders of this region changed many times. At first, the land was organized into different groups like the Turkestan ASSR. The capital of Turkestan was the city of Tashkent.

In 1924, leaders decided to redraw the lines. They used the different ethnic groups to decide where borders should go. This process helped create five separate republics. These were Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. This new way of dividing the land is how the modern countries were formed.

History shows that many battles happened as these borders changed. In 1920, a general named Mikhail Frunze led an army to Bukhara. After four days of fighting, the city's citadel was destroyed. The Red flag was even raised on top of the Kalyan Minaret. Other places like Khorezm also saw changes in how they were ruled. The Khorezm People's Soviet Republic was created from the old Khanate of Khiva. It eventually became part of the Uzbek and Turkmen lands. These events were part of a big shift in how the region was managed.

Each republic had its own important cities and facts.

Kazakhstan was once called the Kyrgyz ASSR before it became its own republic. Almaty was a very large city in Kazakhstan. In Tajikistan, the city of Dushanbe became a center for silk and cotton. The Soviets moved many people there to work. Kyrgyzstan had a capital called Bishkek, which was once named Frunze. The region also had very high mountains. These peaks were some of the highest in the whole Soviet Union.

Today, we can see how these changes shaped the world. The people and cultures of Central Asia are a mix of many groups. In Kazakhstan, many people moved to the "Virgin Lands" to farm. This changed the way of life for the Kazakh people. Many people who used to move with animals had to change. Industry and mining also grew in these areas. You can see how the different groups live together by looking at maps of the region. The history of these borders is still visible in the countries we see today.
