It existed from 1511 until 1920. The land sat in the Khorezm region near the Aral Sea. Most of the kingdom was in the irrigated plains of the lower Amu Darya river. It covered parts of modern Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan. This area was very important for farming and trade.

Local people often called their home the country of Khwārazm. The name "Khiva" actually comes from its capital city.

Life in the Khanate depended on the river and the land. Many people lived along the river to grow crops. These people were often settled farmers and aristocrats. Other groups were nomads or semi-nomads who moved across the plains. The Turkmen nomads were a large part of the Khan's army. They lived away from the river and paid taxes to the leader. Different groups like the Karakalpaks and Kazakhs also lived nearby. The population was a mix of many different cultures and languages.

Many different leaders ruled the land over the centuries. The Arabshahid dynasty was one of the first long-lived families. They began their rule after a conflict with Persia in 1511. Later, the Qongrat tribe became very powerful. They started the Qongrat dynasty in 1804. Some rulers, like Abu al-Ghazi Bahadur, helped bring order to the land. Other times, the kingdom faced hard jobs like invasions or wars. For example, Nader Shah from Persia conquered the area between 1740 and 1746.

In the 1800s, the Russian Empire began to move into the region. Russia made several attempts to take control of Khiva. One attack in 1839 failed because the weather was too cold. Many camels and men were lost in that hard journey. Finally, in 1873, Russia launched a large campaign to conquer the land. They used 13,000 soldiers to take the city of Khiva. After the city fell, Khiva became a Russian protectorate. This meant the Khanate was still there, but Russia helped rule it.

Changes continued as the world moved into the 20th century. The Russian Revolution of 1917 changed everything for the region. In 1920, the Khanate was replaced by a new group called the Khorezm People's Soviet Republic. By 1924, the area was part of the Soviet Union. Today, the land where the Khanate once stood is split between different countries. Most of it is now in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. It is a place with a very long and complex history.
