The Crimean Khanate was a powerful state for the Crimean Tatar people. It existed for over three hundred years, from 1441 to 1783.

This land included the Crimean peninsula and the large, grassy steppes nearby. Many people in Europe called this area "Little Tartary." The inhabitants had their own name for their home, "Qırım yurtu." This means "the country of Crimea." The state was a very important part of the history of the Black Sea region.

To understand the Khanate, we must look at how it began. Before the Khanate, the area was part of the Golden Horde. This was a large empire that ruled the steppes.

Some groups of people wanted to be independent from the Horde. They invited a man named Hacı I Giray to lead them. He had been living in exile in Lithuania. Hacı I Giray fought for independence from 1420 to 1441. He finally succeeded in creating the new state in 1441.

Life in the Khanate changed as the leaders moved. At first, the capital was at a place called Qirim. Later, the leaders moved the capital to Qırq Yer. This place is known today as Bakhchisaray.

The khans were part of the Giray dynasty. They were descendants of the famous leader Genghis Khan. The people living there were very diverse. They included Crimean Tatars, Greeks, Goths, and many others. They lived in both the mountains and the open plains.

In 1475, the Khanate entered a new era with the Ottoman Empire. Ottoman forces took control of the coastal cities.

From then on, the Khanate was a protectorate of the Ottomans. This means they were close allies. The Ottoman Sultan could help choose the new khans. However, the khans still kept much of their own power. They minted their own coins and managed their own lands. The Crimean cavalry was very famous and helped the Ottomans in many wars.

Eventually, the long history of the Khanate came to an end. In 1783, the Russian Empire took over the land.

This action went against a treaty from 1774 called the Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca. That treaty said Russia and the Ottoman Empire should not interfere in Crimea. Most countries stayed quiet when this happened. Only France spoke out and protested against the Russian Empire. The story of the Khanate remains a major part of the history of the Crimean people.
