It existed mostly in Central Ukraine. It also covered parts of Belarus and southwestern Russia. The people often called it the Zaporizhian Host. This state was a military-led land. It was important because it gave the Cossacks a way to rule themselves. They built their own systems for law and money.

This helped them create a real home for their people.

Building this state was a big job for the leaders. The Hetman was the top general and ruler.

He held supreme power over the military and the government. The Cossack officers helped run the civilian parts too. They even built their own elite group of leaders. At first, they used Polish money and language. Later, they began to use their own spoken language in official papers. This helped their own culture grow strong and distinct.

This story began with a major uprising in 1648.

A leader named Bohdan Khmelnytsky led the Cossacks against the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. He wanted to build a state for the Ruthenian people. In 1649, he signed the Treaty of Zboriv. This treaty increased the number of Registered Cossacks to 40,000. It also set certain borders for the Polish forces. Khmelnytsky worked hard to make the Hetmanate a real country.

Finding allies was a very hard task for the Cossacks.

They first looked to the Ottoman Empire for help. Later, they made a famous deal with the Russian Tsar in 1654. This was the Treaty of Pereiaslav. It made the Hetmanate an autonomous part of the Russian state. However, things changed in 1667 with the Treaty of Andrusovo. This treaty divided the land in half along the Dnieper River.

It was made without the Cossacks being there.

The later years were very difficult for the people. A time of civil war called "the Ruin" lasted from 1657 to 1687.

Later, Ivan Mazepa tried to break the union with Russia in 1708. This led to the area becoming part of the Kiev Governorate. Eventually, Catherine II of Russia abolished the position of Hetman in 1764. The last parts of their old system were gone by 1781.
