It sits in a space between the Eastern Carpathian mountains and the Dniester River. This land was once a single principality that existed from the 14th century until 1859. Today, the area is split between three different countries. The western half is part of Romania. The eastern side belongs to the Republic of Moldova. The northern and southeastern parts are now in Ukraine.

People wonder where the name Moldavia comes from. Many think it comes from the Moldova River. One old legend tells a story about a leader named Dragoș.

He was hunting a special aurochs with a star on it. He had a female dog named Molda with him. The dog reached the shores of a new river. The legend says the dog's name joined with a word for water. Other ideas suggest the name comes from the Gothic word for dust. A document from 1334 also mentions a man named Alexa Moldaowicz.

The land was often caught between strong neighbors. At times, it was a vassal to Hungary or Poland. It also had to deal with the Ottoman Empire. The rulers often had to pay tribute to keep peace.

Many strong leaders helped shape this history. Stephen the Great was one of the most famous rulers.
