It sits in a very specific spot on the map. The Southern Carpathian mountains lie to its north. The Lower Danube river runs along its southern edge.

The region was traditionally split into two main parts. These parts are called Muntenia and Oltenia. Some people also included a third area called Dobruja. Because Muntenia was the larger section, people sometimes just called the whole region Muntenia.

Many different groups of people lived in this land over time. Long ago, the Romans ruled parts of the area. They even built a line of forts called a limes along the Olt River.

After the Romans left, other groups like the Goths and Sarmatians arrived. Later, the Slavs crossed into the territory and settled there. The First Bulgarian Empire also controlled the land for a long time. Eventually, groups called the Pechenegs and then the Cumans held power in the region.

Wallachia began to form as its own state around the 13th century. This happened as smaller groups joined together. A famous leader named Basarab I helped make the state strong. In 1330, he won a big victory at the Battle of Posada.

This win helped Wallachia become more independent. Some stories say a legendary figure named Radu Negru helped start the nation in 1290. He is said to have crossed the mountains with many followers to find a new home.

For many years, the Ottoman Empire held power over Wallachia. This started in 1417 and lasted until the mid-19th century. Even under this rule, Wallachia tried to keep its own way of doing things. Local rulers like Vlad the Impaler and Michael the Brave fought to keep their power.

Other big powers like the Russian Empire also influenced the land. Leaders like Mircea I even had their own official seals to show their rule.

Wallachia eventually became part of the modern country we know as Romania. In 1859, Wallachia joined with Moldavia to form the United Principalities. This group took the name Romania in 1866. By 1881, it officially became the Kingdom of Romania.

Later, more lands like Transylvania were added to the country. This helped create the borders of the Romanian state we see today. The name Wallachia comes from old words used by Germanic and Slavic people. It was a name used by others to describe the people living there.
