He was the son of Radu I and part of the House of Basarab. Mircea took the throne after his step-brother, Dan I, died. During his time as leader, he made the country much stronger. He helped the economy grow and organized how the government worked. Many people today call him Mircea the Great because of his work.

He gained new areas like Dobruja and the Banate of Severin in 1388. He also held lands called Amlaș and Făgăraș in Transylvania. These new lands helped him control more of the region.

To keep his country safe, Mircea built a strong military. He made a large army from townspeople and peasants. He also built strong walls around citadels along the Danube.

Mircea was also very good at trade and money. He made silver coins that people used in many different countries. He gave special trade rights to merchants from Poland and Lithuania. He also helped the Eastern Orthodox Church by building many beautiful churches. One famous building he made was the Cozia Monastery around 1390.

Mircea had to face many hard battles to protect his home. The Ottoman Empire wanted to expand into his lands. In 1394, the Ottoman leader Bayezid I crossed the Danube with 40,000 men. Mircea only had 10,000 men, so he could not fight a large open battle. Instead, he used small attacks and retreats to wear down the enemy. This happened at the Battle of Rovine in a swampy forest.
