He ruled from the year 1440 until 1469. His name meant "he is angry like a lord." He was the son of Emperor Huitzilihuitl and Queen Miahuaxihuitl. Moctezuma helped the Aztec Empire grow much larger than it was before. He was also known by other names like Moteuczomatzin Ilhuicamina. Many people confuse him with a later leader named Moctezuma II.

Moctezuma became the leader after a long time of change. His brother Chimalpopoca ruled for ten years before he died. Moctezuma and his brother Tlacaelel I led a group of young nobles. They chose a leader named Itzcoatl to rule next. Moctezuma served as a general in the army under Itzcoatl. In 1440, the nobles elected Moctezuma to power at age 42.

He took the title of "Great Speaker." This meant he spoke for the Aztecs and many other people.

During his rule, Moctezuma built a strong group called the Triple Alliance. This alliance included Tenochtitlan, Texcoco, and a small city called Tlacopan.

They shared the wealth they gained from their lands. Moctezuma and a leader named Nezahualcoyotl built a special water system. They used a double aqueduct to bring fresh water to the city. This helped the people of Tenochtitlan have enough water to drink. He also led his army to the Gulf Coast. This gave the Aztecs new things like cocoa, rubber, and colorful feathers.

Life was not always easy for the Aztec people. Moctezuma had to face many natural disasters. In 1446, a swarm of locusts ate the crops. In 1449, the waters of Lake Texcoco flooded the city. Then, a frost and a long drought hit the land.

These hard times meant there was not enough food for everyone. Because of the hunger, the city lost many of its people. These problems eventually ended the period of peace in his empire.

Moctezuma also made many new laws to organize his empire. He created rules about what different people could wear. For example, only noblemen could have houses with a second story. He also made rules for schools and for how people were treated in the palace. He wanted to make sure the government was very strong. Today, his name is still used as a symbol of strength. He is remembered as a leader who shaped the history of Mexico.
