His name means "Fasting Coyote." This name refers to a special paper collar. People wore these collars while fasting. He was a leader with many talents. He was a warrior, an architect, and a poet. People called him the "Poet-King." He helped lead a golden age in his land.

His early life was very difficult and dangerous. His father was Ixtlilxochitl I, the king of Texcoco. A powerful group called the Tepanecs attacked his home. Nezahualcoyotl was only 16 years old when his father died. He had to live in hiding for many years. He stayed in places like Tlaxcallan and Tenochtitlan to stay safe. The Tepanec ruler, Maxtla, tried to find him many times. Nezahualcoyotl had to be very clever to survive.
