The empire lasted from 1428 until 1521. At that time, the Spanish and their allies defeated them.

The empire worked through a system called indirect rule. This meant the Aztecs did not rule every single town directly. Instead, they let the local leaders stay in power. These leaders had to follow certain rules to keep their jobs. They had to pay tribute to the alliance every six months. Tribute was a payment made with goods or resources.

They also had to send soldiers to help the Aztec army. In return, the empire gave them protection and stability. This helped different groups trade and work together. It was a way to keep many lands connected.

The history of the Mexica people began with a long journey. They came from a mythical place called Aztlan.

They arrived in the Basin of Mexico around the year 1250. At first, they were not the strongest group. They lived in a place called Chapultepec. Later, they moved to an island in Lake Texcoco. They saw an eagle on a cactus there. This was a sign from their gods.

They used this sign to found Tenochtitlan in 1325. This city eventually became the most important part of the empire.

Many leaders helped shape how the empire functioned. A leader named Itzcoatl helped start the Triple Alliance in 1428.

After him, Moctezuma I became a very important ruler. He made new laws to organize the people. He also built schools in every neighborhood. Some schools were for commoners to learn religion and military skills. Other schools were for the nobility and priests.

There was even a special title for commoners who did great work. It was like being a knight. This helped people move up in society.

Religion was a huge part of daily life for the Aztecs. They believed in many different gods of nature. They also believed in a supreme god called Ometeotl.

These were not wars to destroy an enemy. Instead, they were meant to capture live prisoners. Warriors wanted to catch enemies for religious ceremonies. This was a very important part of their culture. The empire's religion helped bring many different people together.
