The Zapotec civilization was a group of people in Mesoamerica. They lived in the Valley of Oaxaca for a very long time. They called themselves the "Cloud People."

This culture began at least 2,500 years ago. The Zapotec lived in a place with three large valleys. These valleys are called Etla, Ocotlán, and Mitla. The soil there was very good for growing food like maize.

Today, many people in Mexico are descendants of the Zapotec.

In the beginning, small groups lived in the different valleys. These groups often competed or fought with each other. Around 700 BC, people left older settlements like San José Mogote. They moved to a high mountain to stay safe. They built a great city there called Monte Albán.

This city was one of the first major cities in the region. Building a city on a mountain helped people meet external threats. This way of moving to a central city is called synoikism.

As time went on, the Zapotec state grew much larger. Between 400 BC and AD 200, their power expanded quickly. They took control of many provinces outside the Oaxaca valley. By the year 200, their influence reached far north and south.

Archaeologists found a special building at Monte Albán called Building J. It is shaped like an arrowhead. This building has over 40 carved stones with writing. These stones show the rulers of the lands they conquered.

History brought many changes and hard times to the Zapotec. In the 1450s, the Aztec forces invaded the Valley of Oaxaca. The Aztecs took control of the area in 1458. Later, Spanish explorers arrived in the year 1521. King Cosijoeza decided to make peace with the Spaniards. This choice helped his people avoid a lot of fighting.

However, new diseases from Europe caused many people to get sick.

Even with these changes, Zapotec culture is still very much alive. There are seven different Zapotec languages spoken today. These languages use different tones to change the meaning of words.

You can hear these languages in Mexico and even in Los Angeles. Many Zapotec people are also known for their work in farming.
