People lived in large apartment compounds with many rooms. These buildings held many different families at once. To grow food, people used raised garden beds called chinampas.

These gardens helped them grow plenty of food in the swampy ground. They also used canoes to move food through water channels. The city was also a place for making things. People made sharp tools from a dark stone called obsidian.

The city had a population of about 100,000 people at its peak. This was about half of all the people in the whole valley. Even though it was a huge city, there is no sign of a single king. Instead, the city seemed to be run in a more shared way.

Around 550 CE, many major buildings were burned. Some scholars think extreme weather in 535 CE caused problems. The city lost its power after 650 CE. Long after the city fell, the Aztecs found the ruins. They gave the site the name Teotihuacan.
