Other important cities included Tulancingo and Huapalcalco. The Toltecs were known as skilled artisans. This means they were very good at making things by hand. They built large and impressive structures for their people.

Life in the capital city changed over time.

Around the years 900 to 950, the city underwent major redevelopment. People moved from an old area called Tula Chico to a new district. This new area was known as Tula Grande. It contained important political and religious buildings. One famous building was the Palacio Quemado, or Burnt Palace.

The city became a place where many different people lived together. Groups like the Nonoalca and Chichimeca moved there to live.

Stories about the Toltec origins are very old.

Some oral traditions tell of a city named Tlachicatzin. In 583, leaders named Chalcaltzin and Tlacamihtzin led a rebellion. After thirteen years of fighting, the people fled. Some later founded a new settlement in 604 called Tlapallanconco. Other historians have debated these stories for many years. Some thought the Toltec city was actually Teotihuacan. However, many scholars disagree with that idea today.

A famous ruler named Cē Ācatl Topiltzin Quetzalcoatl led Tollan.

He ruled from the year 923 to 947. He was known as a wise and holy king. He even spoke against the practice of human sacrifice. Legend says he was tricked into acting disgracefully after drinking pulque.

This drink was a fermented syrup made from the maguey plant. After this event, Quetzalcoatl left the city and traveled east. His departure caused much trouble for the empire.

Conflict eventually broke out between different religious groups.

Supporters of Quetzalcoatl fought those who followed the god Tezcatlipoca. This religious war lasted from 1046 to 1110. A great famine also hit the land between 1070 and 1077. These hard times caused many Toltecs to leave their homes. Many moved to the Yucatan Peninsula to live in cities like Uxmal.
