It sits in the Puuc region of the Yucatán Peninsula. This city is a very important site for Maya history. It is one of the best examples of Puuc architecture. This style uses smooth, low walls. These walls are decorated with fancy patterns called friezes. Some patterns look like old Maya huts. They use columns to look like reeds. They use shapes to look like thatched roofs.

The buildings at Uxmal are very special. Many have masks of the rain god, Chaac. These masks have big noses to show rain rays. You can also see feathered serpents on the walls. Some buildings use the shape of an oval. This is different from most Maya pyramids. The Pyramid of the Magician is one such structure. It has five levels and an unusual shape. People also built a large Ballcourt here. It was dedicated in 901 by a ruler named Chan Chak K'ak'nal Ajaw.

History tells us much about this place. The name Uxmal might mean "three times built." This could mean the city was rebuilt many times. There is also a legend about a dwarf king. People say he built the city in just one night. The Nunnery Quadrangle was built between the years 900 and 1000. It has four palaces around a courtyard. This area was likely a royal palace for meetings. It was a place for leaders to make big decisions.

Uxmal has many specific and amazing details. The Governor's Palace sits on a huge platform. It has the longest facades in the area. This building is lined up with the stars. It follows the path of the planet Venus. There are almost 400 Venus symbols on the walls. The number 8 also appears on some masks. Ancient roads called sacbes connected Uxmal to other cities. These paths led to places like Tikal and Chichén Itzá.
