One very famous hole is the Sacred Cenote. Scientists even found a hidden cenote under the Temple of Kukulkan in 2015. Long ago, people offered items to the rain god, Chaac, in the water. Edward Herbert Thompson searched the Sacred Cenote from 1904 to 1910. He found gold, jade, and pottery there.

The city grew into a huge power over many years. It was a major center from the year 600 AD until about 1200 AD.

Chichen Itza has many different types of buildings. You can see many architectural styles in the ruins.

Some styles look like they came from central Mexico. Other styles are local to the northern Maya lowlands. This variety might be because the city had a diverse population. Some researchers thought the city was ruled by a council of leaders. This idea was called the "multepal" system.
