The city sits in a very dry part of the coastal desert. Because it hardly ever rains, the people had to be very smart about water. They used water from rivers that carried runoff from the Andes mountains. They built irrigation systems to move this water to the land. This allowed them to control the water and grow what they needed. Without these clever systems, the city could not have survived in the desert.

People began building Chan Chan around 850 CE. The Chimú culture established itself along the coast during this time. The city grew to hold between 40,000 and 60,000 people. It was a place with many different levels of society. Wealthy royals lived in large, walled areas called ciudadelas. These beautiful buildings had plazas, storerooms, and places for royal burials.

Lower class citizens lived in smaller, irregular rooms called SIARs. Many of these rooms served as workshops for artisans. These makers produced many crafts for the empire. The city's history changed in 1470 when the Inca Empire defeated the Chimor. Later, in 1535, the Spanish founded the city of Trujillo nearby. The Spanish even took gold from the city's burial tombs. One list showed they found gold worth nearly $5,000,000 US dollars.

Today, experts work hard to protect the city. Since 1986, UNESCO has listed Chan Chan as a World Heritage Site. Because the buildings are made of adobe bricks and mud, rain can hurt them. Archaeologists use rain coverings and new drainage systems to keep them safe. They also use modern engineering to fix the walls. People still study the beautiful carvings of fish and birds on the walls.
