It sits right on the western coast of South America. This spot is known as the Arica Bend or Arica Elbow. The city is the northernmost city in Chile. It is very close to the border with Peru. The city is surrounded by the dry Atacama Desert. It sits where two valleys, Azapa and Lluta, meet. These valleys are very important for farming. They grow olives and citrus fruits to sell to other countries. Even though the desert is very dry, the weather is not too harsh. Cool winds blow in from the nearby ocean. These winds create a mild climate. People often call Arica the "city of the eternal spring."

Arica has a very long and complex history. People have lived in this area for at least 10,000 years. These early groups were the first known people to make mummies. Their mummies were found buried less than one meter deep. Later, Spanish settlers arrived in 1541. The city became a major port for the Spanish Empire. It was used to move silver from the Potosí mines.

The city has faced many difficult events over the years. In 1868, a massive earthquake hit the region. This quake was very strong, with a magnitude between 8.0 and 9.0. It caused a tsunami that traveled across the Pacific Ocean. The earthquake left the city in ruins near the Morro de Arica.

In the 1980s, the city dealt with a problem involving toxic waste. A company left behind large amounts of smelting sludge. This caused serious health problems for many local people.

Today, Arica is a diverse and growing place. It has a population of 241,653 people. Many different groups live here, including indigenous Aymara people and descendants of African Chileans. The city is a major hub for trade in South America. It acts as a free port for Bolivia.
