It is the second-largest region in the whole country. This area sits right by the Pacific Ocean. To the north, it meets Tarapacá. To the south, it borders Atacama. To the east, it sits next to Bolivia and Argentina. The region is split into three provinces. These are Antofagasta, El Loa, and Tocopilla. The city of Antofagasta is the capital and a busy port. Another very important city is Calama.

Nature here is very extreme and dry. Most of the land is part of the Atacama Desert. This is the driest desert on Earth. In many places, there are no plants at all. You can see salt flats and lava flows. There are also big cliffs along the coast. The only green spots are near the Loa River. You can also find life at oases like San Pedro de Atacama.

The weather is very dry, but the coast is a bit milder.

Long ago, different groups of people lived here. The Changos were fishing clans along the coast. They were nomads, which means they moved from place to place. In the inland areas, the Atacameño people lived. They lived near the Loa River and the Salar de Atacama salt lake. They grew corn and beans. They even traded with people far away in the Amazon. Later, the Inca rule and Spanish arrival changed their culture. This mixing of cultures is called mestizaje.

History changed when the land belonged to Bolivia. It was called the Litoral Department back then. In 1879, the War of the Pacific began. After the war, Chile took over the territory. This led to many people moving to the coast. They came for the saltpeter boom. Later, people came from many places like Europe and Asia. This made the local culture very diverse. Today, the region is a major part of Chile's mining industry.

Copper mining is the most important job here.

The region produces 53% of all mining in Chile. Some of the biggest mines in the world are here. They are named La Escondida and Chuquicamata. Mining helps the region earn a lot of money. Because of this, many people live in Calama or near the coast. People also visit to see the beautiful scenery. You can visit hot springs or look at stars through big telescopes. These telescopes help us learn about space.
