It is the second-largest region in the country. It sits near the Pacific Ocean. To the north is Tarapacá. To the south is Atacama. To the east are Bolivia and Argentina.

The land is very dry. Much of it is part of the Atacama Desert. This is the driest desert in the world. Most places have no plants. You can find green life near the Loa River. You can also find it at oases. An oasis is a place with water in a dry land.
