Maule Region

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Maule Region is a special part of Chile. It is one of the 16 main areas in the country. The region gets its name from the Maule River. This river flows from the Andes mountains toward the west. It splits the region into two parts. Long ago, this river was the southern edge of the Inca Empire.

The land in Maule changes a lot from one side to the other. On the west, you will find the Pacific Ocean. In the east, the land rises into the high Andes mountains. Between the ocean and the mountains, there is a place called the Chilean Coast Range. There is also a wide area called the Chilean Central Valley. The region is bordered by Argentina to the east. To the north is the O'Higgins Region. To the south is the Ñuble Region.

Nature is very important in this part of the world. You can find rare living things here. One example is the Chilean wine palm. This tree is endangered, which means it is at risk. Other rare trees include the Nothofagus alessandrii and the Gomortega keule. To keep these plants safe, there are many protected areas. These include the Radal Siete Tazas National Park and the Altos de Lircay National Reserve.

Many people call Maule their home. About 1,123,008 people lived there in 2024. Talca is the capital city and the largest city. It has 232,131 people living in it. Other big cities are Curicó and Linares. Many people in Maule live in rural areas. In fact, one third of the people live in the countryside. This is more than in any other region in Chile.

Work in Maule often happens on farms. The region is very famous for making wine. It produces 50% of all the fine export wines in Chile. The Curicó Valley is the center of this work. Some of these vineyards started a long time ago, in 1830. Farmers also grow flowers, fruit, and vegetables. The Maule River is also used to make electricity. Five power plants use the river to create energy for people to use.
