This place is named after Bernardo O'Higgins Riquelme. He was one of the founding fathers of Chile. The region sits near the Pacific Ocean to the west. To the east, it meets the Republic of Argentina. It also touches the Valparaíso and Santiago regions to the north. The Maule Region sits to its south.

Nature looks very different across this land. Long ago, huge Nothofagus forests covered much of the area. Today, you might find the rare Chilean Wine Palm here. This tree is endangered and lives in a very small area. High in the Andes mountains, the land is rocky. You can find glaciers and rock glaciers there. The El Teniente copper mine sits high in these mountains. Nearby, there is also a place called Catedral.

People have lived here for a very long time. From 9000 BCE to 300 BCE, people moved between the coast and the mountains. They left behind shell deposits at places like Pichilemu. Later, around 300 BCE, people began to farm. They grew beans, maize, squash, and pumpkins. Most of these crops needed water from creeks and rivers. People lived in Quincha houses made with straw roofs. By the Colonial Period, Spanish settlers arrived and started ranching.

Many people live in the O'Higgins Region today. The largest city is Rancagua, which has 257,774 people. It is the capital of the region. Rancagua is only 87 km south of Santiago. San Fernando is the second largest town with 75,585 people. Other busy towns include Rengo and Machalí. The region is split into three provinces. These are Cachapoal, Colchagua, and Cardenal Caro.

Work in the region helps many people. Mining is a huge job at the El Teniente mine. This mine produces 7.7% of all the copper in Chile. Farming is also very important for the economy. One out of every four fruit orchards in Chile is located here. Farmers grow apples, pears, grapes, and kiwis. This area is also called the "huaso province." A huaso is a Chilean cowboy. People in Doñihue weave beautiful sashes and mantas. They use designs like vine leaves and grapes.
