geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins Region is a major administrative division of Chile. It is one of the country's 16 first-order regions. The area is named to honor Bernardo O'Higgins Riquelme. He was one of the founding fathers of Chile.

Geographically, the region sits between 33° 51' and 35° 01' south latitude. To the west, it meets the Pacific Ocean. To the east, it shares a border with the Republic of Argentina. The Valparaíso and Santiago Metropolitan Regions lie to the north. The Maule Region is located to the south.

The landscape changes significantly from the coast to the mountains. In prehistoric times, extensive Nothofagus forests covered much of the region. Today, the area is part of the very restricted range for the Chilean Wine Palm. This tree, known as Jubaea chilensis, is an endangered endemic species. In the high Andes mountains, the environment is much harsher. This area contains glaciers and rock glaciers. Near these glaciers lies the Catedral copper mine prospect.

Human history in this region spans many thousands of years. During the Archaic Period, from 9000 BCE to 300 BCE, people moved between the coast and the valleys. They left shell middens, which are trash deposits, at sites like Pichilemu and Cáhuil. During the Agroalfarero Period, from 300 BCE to 1470 CE, life changed through agriculture. People began growing beans, maize, squashes, pumpkins, and quinoa. Because crops like maize required irrigation, people moved closer to rivers and creeks. They lived in Quincha houses, which feature straw roofs. During the Colonial Period, Spanish settlers arrived and introduced ranching.

The region is divided into three distinct provinces for administration. The first is Cachapoal Province, which has its capital in Rancagua. The second is Colchagua Province, with its capital in San Fernando. The third is Cardenal Caro Province, which is centered in Pichilemu.

These three provinces are further divided into 33 communes. The regional government is led by a governor and a regional council. The council consists of twenty members. Thirteen members represent Cachapoal, five represent Colchagua, and two represent Cardenal Caro.

Today, the region has a large rural population. Rancagua is the largest city, with 257,774 inhabitants. It serves as the regional capital and the capital of Cachapoal Province. Rancagua is located 87 km south of Santiago. It has recently become an outskirt of the Santiago metropolitan area. Other major cities include San Fernando, which has 75,585 people. Rengo, Machalí, and San Vicente de Tagua Tagua are also densely populated.

The economy relies heavily on mining and agriculture. The El Teniente mine is a massive industrial site. It is operated by CODELCO and produces 7.7% of Chile's total copper. This ore is processed at the Sewell and Colón plants. It is then refined at Caletones and shipped through the port of San Antonio. Agriculture also plays a vital role, contributing 30.1% of the regional GDP. One out of every four fruit orchards in Chile is located here. The region grows apples, pears, grapes, kiwis, and nectarines.

Culture in the region is deeply tied to the identity of the huaso. A huaso is a traditional Chilean cowboy. Because of this, the area is often called the "huaso province." In Doñihue, weavers use heavy vertical looms to make traditional sashes and mantas. These items often feature designs of vine leaves, grapes, or pine trees. The population is a mix of indigenous and European cultures. This blend is known as Chileanidad, or a mestizo imprint. Many different European groups, such as the French, Italians, and Germans, helped shape the local wine and brewing industries.
