geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Araucanía Region is a special part of Chile. It is divided into two provinces named Malleco and Cautín. The capital city is Temuco, which is also the largest city there. Other busy cities include Angol and Villarrica.

This area is famous for its beautiful and wild nature. You can see big forests, lakes, and even volcanoes. Many of these places are kept safe in national parks. These parks include Nahuelbuta, Tolhuaca, Conguillío, Villarrica, and Huerquehue.

The land is home to many different types of trees. You might see coigüe, raulí, or tepa trees in the woods. One very famous tree is the Araucaria araucana. People call it the monkey-puzzle tree or the pehuén. This tree grows huge nuts called piñón. These nuts are a very important food for the Pehuenche people.

The soil here was once very good for farming. Farmers used to grow so much wheat that people called the region the "granary of Chile."

The history of this land is very long. The Mapuche people are the indigenous people of this region. They fought hard to protect their home from the Incas and the Spanish. The Chilean government began to take over the land in the 1860s. By 1882, the area was fully part of Chile. Many towns started as small army outposts during this time.

Since then, many different people have moved to live here.

Many people have traveled from far away to settle in Araucanía. In the late 1800s, people came from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Some families also came from the Canary Islands in 1903. There are also communities with roots in Italy, Syria, and China. Today, about 25% of the people are ethnic Mapuche. This is the highest number of indigenous people in any part of Chile.

This mix of people makes the culture very interesting.

Today, many people work in farming and tourism. Farmers grow crops like oats, barley, rye, and potatoes. They also raise a lot of cattle, making it a huge business. In the Gorbea area, people grow berries like raspberries and blueberries. Many visitors come to see the lakes and mountains. The town of Pucón is a very popular place for tourists.

Temuco is also growing very fast as more people move there.
