The name of the city tells a story about the land. In the Mapudungun language, Temuco means "temu water."

The word "temu" refers to two types of native trees. One is called Luma apiculata, and the other is Blepharocalyx cruckshanksii. These trees have orange-reddish bark and smell very nice. They are often used by the Mapuche people for medicine. Because these trees like to grow near water, the name combines "temu" with the word for water.

It was founded by the Chilean army during a time called the Occupation of the Araucanía. A man named Manuel Recabarren was in charge of the project. He originally named the site Fuerte Recabarren. The city grew very quickly after it started. By 1895, there were 7,708 people living there. By the time it became a provincial capital, the population had grown to 16,037 people.

Today, Temuco is a very diverse place with many different cultures.

About 23.1% of the people in the commune are Mapuche. This is the largest indigenous presence of any city in Chile. Many people also come from Europe, including Germany, Spain, and Italy. There are also communities from Korea, China, and Japan.
