geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Araucanía is a large region in Chile. It has two main parts called provinces. These are Malleco in the north and Cautín in the south.

The land is very beautiful. You can find many forests and lakes. There are also big mountains and volcanoes. One special tree is the monkey-puzzle tree. It is also called the pehuén. This tree grows huge nuts called piñón. These nuts are a main food for local people. Many of these forests are in national parks.

The Mapuche people are the heart of this land. They have lived here for a very long time. They once fought to keep their land. Today, about one third of the people are Mapuche. This is the highest number in any part of Chile.

Many people live in cities like Temuco. Temuco is the largest city in the region. Other important cities are Angol and Villarrica.

Farming is very important here. People grow wheat, oats, and potatoes. The land was once called the "granary of Chile." This is because it grew so much wheat. People also raise many cattle there. Tourism is also a big job because the views are so nice.
