geography Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The Altiplano is a massive high plain in South America. It is the largest high plateau on Earth outside of Tibet. This area sits in the central Andes mountains. Most of the land is in Bolivia. It also reaches into parts of Peru, Chile, and Argentina.

The plateau is very high up. Its average height is about 3,750 meters. Because the land is so high, the air can feel thin. This can cause a feeling called hypoxia.

The land has many different looks. The northeast part is more humid and wet. The southwest part is very dry and arid. This dry area has large salt flats called salares. One famous one is the Salar de Uyuni.

In the past, huge lakes covered these areas. Today, only some parts of those old lakes remain. Lake Titicaca sits on the border of Peru and Bolivia. It is the largest lake in South America. Another lake, Lake Poopó, dried up completely by December 2015.

Many huge mountains surround the plain. To the west, there are many active volcanoes. Some of these include Parinacota and Uturunku. These volcanoes are part of the Central Volcanic Zone. In the northeast, you will find the Cordillera Real. This range has tall peaks like Illimani.

The Altiplano is tucked between different worlds. To the east lies the green Amazon rainforest. To the southwest is the very dry Atacama Desert.

People have lived on this plateau for a very long time. Many ancient cultures once called this place home. These include the Chiripa, the Tiawanaku, and the Inca Empire. Later, Spain conquered the region in the 16th century. Today, many different groups live here. These include the Qulla, Uros, Quechua, and Aymara people. There are many towns and cities on the plateau. El Alto and Oruro are in Bolivia. Juliaca and Puno are in Peru.
