Silver was found in the mountain by Diego Huallpa in 1545. This discovery led to the fast growth of the city. For a long time, the mountain supplied most of the silver for the Spanish Empire. The silver was moved in long lines of llamas and mules. It went to the Pacific coast and then to Panama. From there, it was sent on ships to Spain. Some silver also traveled to Mexico or even to Asia. This silver helped trade all around the world.

Extracting the silver was a difficult and changing job. At first, miners used small clay furnaces called guayras. These were used by the Incas before the Spanish arrived. Later, miners used new ways to get silver from the rocks. One way used mercury to help pull silver out. Another way was a pan process made in Potosí in 1609. These methods allowed the mines to keep working for many years. The silver was then turned into coins at a local mint.

Many people lived and worked in Potosí during its busy years. By 1603, the city had many different groups of people. There were thousands of native Andeans and many Europeans. There were also many African people living there. The Spanish used a system called the mita to find workers. This meant many native men had to work in the mines. This was a very hard job for them. They often carried heavy loads up steep, dark ladders.
