It is the 20th-largest state in the country, covering about 30,589 square kilometers. The state shares borders with five other Mexican states: Jalisco, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosí, Querétaro, and Michoacán. The name Guanajuato comes from the Purépecha language and means "frog hill."

The land sits between the dry north and the greener south. It is part of the Mexican Plateau and the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. This makes the ground very interesting for both plants and people.

The land is divided into many different types of environments. In the north, the Altos de Guanajuato features forested mountains and pastures. You might see cacti or desert plants in these dry areas.

The Sierra Gorda is a very rugged area that is part of a protected biosphere. It has many different micro-climates, meaning the weather changes quickly from one spot to another. You can find everything from tropical rainforests to pine forests and even deserts. The highest point in the state is Pinal de Zamorano, which reaches 3,500 meters.

In the center of the state lies the Bajío region. This is a relatively low and flat area that surrounds the Lerma River. The name "Bajío" comes from a Spanish word meaning "low." Long ago, this area was covered in thick forests of oak and mesquite trees. Later, mining needed wood for fuel, so the trees were cleared away. Now, the Bajío is one of the most productive farming areas in Mexico.

Farmers here grow many things like grains, vegetables, and fruit.

History has shaped how people live in Guanajuato. Spanish settlers arrived in the 1520s to find minerals in the ground. This led to a strong mining industry that helped the state grow.

The state also has a famous "Bicentennial Route" used during the Mexican War of Independence. This path follows the army of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. It passes through cities like Dolores Hidalgo, San Miguel de Allende, and Celaya.
