The name Michoacán comes from the Nahuatl language. It means "place of the fishermen." This refers to people fishing on Lake Pátzcuaro.

Other groups like the Otomi and Nahua also live there. The economy relies on many different jobs. People work in farming, ranching, and fishing. They also work in mining and the arts.

Later, people lived in agricultural villages. These groups made their own styles of pottery. Different cultures lived near lakes and rivers. They built villages on islands or along marshy shores. As time passed, these villages grew into larger ceremonial centres. These centres had plazas, pyramids, and ball courts.
