Seven other Mexican states share a border with it. These neighbors are Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí, Hidalgo, Puebla, Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Tabasco. The state is divided into 212 different municipalities. Its capital city is named Xalapa-Enríquez. Other major cities include Veracruz, Coatzacoalcos, Córdoba, and Minatitlán.

The state is known for its many different cultures and tasty food.

Long before explorers arrived, many indigenous groups lived here. The Olmecs were one of the most important groups. They lived near the Coatzacoalcos River region. They are famous for making huge stone heads.

These heads are their most well-known art. The Olmecs reached their peak about 2,600 years ago. Some experts call them a "mother culture" for other civilizations. The Totonacs also lived in the area. They grew crops like maize, beans, and vanilla.

They even made clay sculptures with smiling faces.

In 1519, Spanish explorers led by Hernán Cortés arrived. They founded the town of Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz.

This was the first Spanish town in what is now Mexico. The port of Veracruz became a very busy place. It was the main way to move goods to and from Spain. Ships carried silver, chocolate, and vanilla out to the world. They also brought in wheat, horses, and sugar cane. Because it held so much wealth, pirates often tried to attack the port.

The history of the state involves many different people. During the colonial years, many people came from Spain and Africa. This led to a mix of European and indigenous roots. This mix is often called "mestizo." There is also a group called "Afro-Mestizo" with African, indigenous, and Spanish roots. One famous leader was a man named Gaspar Yanga. He led a rebellion of people escaping slavery. In 1618, a pact was signed that allowed his people to form their own community.
