It sits right on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. This city is in the central part of the state of Veracruz. It is the most crowded city in that entire state. Part of the city even reaches into a neighbor, Boca del Río.

In the year 2020, over 537,000 people lived in the city itself. The whole municipality had more than 607,000 people living there. It is a place where the land meets the sea.

The city has a long and busy history of trade.

Long ago, the Spanish built roads to connect the port to other cities. These paths led to places like Xalapa, Puebla, and Córdoba. Ships would come to the port to carry gold and silver. The city became a center for many different types of workers. You would see sailors, merchants, and people moving goods on mules. This trade made the city very wealthy during the colonial years.

Spanish explorers first arrived in this area in 1518.

A man named Hernán Cortés founded the city in 1519. He named it Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz. This name meant "Rich Village of the True Cross." He chose this name because they landed on Good Friday. The city was the first in mainland America to get a coat-of-arms.

This happened in 1523 when it was authorized in Spain.

Because the city was so rich, it faced many dangers.

Pirates often tried to raid the city for its wealth. To stay safe, people built the Fort of San Juan de Ulúa.

The city also saw many wars and invasions. France and the United States both sent troops to the city at different times. In 1914, US troops stayed in the city for seven months. These events helped the city earn the title of "Heroic City."

Today, Veracruz is a place where many cultures meet.
