It sits on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. The city is in the central part of the state of Veracruz. It is the most populous city in that state. Part of the urban area extends into the neighboring municipality of Boca del Río. In the 2020 census, the Veracruz Municipality had 607,209 inhabitants. The city itself had a population of 537,952 people.

This city serves as a vital economic engine for the region.

The history of Veracruz began with Spanish exploration. In 1518, Juan de Grijalva and Bernal Díaz del Castillo arrived at an island. They named it San Juan de Ulúa. The name honors the captain and the feast of John the Baptist. In 1519, Hernán Cortés founded a settlement nearby. He named it Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz. This name means "Rich Village of the True Cross." He chose this name because they landed on Good Friday.

The settlement was the first on mainland America to receive a coat-of-arms. This was authorized by Carlos V in 1523.

During the colonial period, Veracruz became a massive center for trade. The city had a very large and wealthy mercantile class. At times, it was wealthier than Mexico City. Spanish treasure fleets visited the port twice every year. These voyages involved many workers like sailors, merchants, and navigators. The Spanish built roads to connect the port to cities like Córdoba and Xalapa. They exported large amounts of gold and silver. However, this wealth attracted many dangers. Pirates from rival nations frequently attacked the area.

To defend against these raids, the Spanish built Fort San Juan de Ulúa. They also built a wall around the city in 1790.

The city has faced many military conflicts throughout its history. In 1837, the city defended itself against a French attack. This earned it the title of "Heroic City." In 1847, the United States invaded during the Mexican-American War.

US forces occupied the city and the fort for several days. During the Mexican Revolution, US troops occupied the port for seven months in 1914. This period of occupation also earned the city its fourth "Heroic City" title. These conflicts shaped the modern identity of the municipality.

Veracruz is also a place of significant cultural blending. The population has roots in indigenous, Spanish, and Afro-Caribbean cultures. This mix is very visible in local traditions. You can hear it in the music, such as Son Jarocho.

You can also taste it in the local food. The history of the African diaspora is also important here. During the colonial era, the Portuguese Empire imported African slaves through this port. In the 16th century, this state had more slaves than any other in Mexico. This history has left a lasting mark on the social fabric of the region.

The economy of Veracruz has changed over the centuries. For much of the 20th century, petroleum production was the main economic driver for the state. However, the port has re-emerged as the primary economic engine recently. It is now the principal port for most Mexican imports and exports. The automotive industry relies heavily on this port for trade.

In the 1970s, the federal government took control of the ports to modernize them. They introduced automation for loading and unloading goods. This change reduced port jobs by 80 percent. Eventually, a new organization called Empresa de Servicios Portuarios de Veracruz began managing functions.
