The area is surrounded by many rivers and lagoons. These wetlands make the land very wet and green. The city is part of a large metropolitan area. This area includes the nearby cities of Ciudad Madero and Altamira. It is the fifth-largest city in its state.

The name Tampico comes from the Huastec language. The word tam-piko means "place of otters." It can also mean "place of water dogs." This name fits because otters lived in the local rivers for a long time. Many different groups of people lived here centuries ago. The Huastec people had settlements at a site called Las Flores. This site was important between the years AD 1000 and 1250. Later, Spanish settlers arrived in the 1500s. They built a mission and a monastery in the area.

Tampico has a very interesting history of change. In 1554, officials founded a town called San Luis de Tampico. However, pirates attacked the area often. Because of this, people moved south of the river in 1684. The area was empty for almost 150 years. The current city was finally founded on April 13, 1823. This happened after Mexico became independent from Spain. In 1829, Spanish troops tried to take the city back. General Antonio López de Santa Anna stopped them in September.

In the early 1900s, Tampico became very wealthy. This happened because of a huge oil boom. Edward Doheny drilled the first Mexican oil well nearby in 1901. The oil area was so rich it was called the "Golden Belt."

During this time, Tampico was a top oil port in the world. This wealth helped build beautiful, grand buildings. Some buildings look like those in Venice or New Orleans. Many have pretty wrought-iron balconies. You can see these styles in the downtown areas.

Life in Tampico is full of unique things to see and taste. The weather is tropical, hot, and very humid. Most of the time it is warm, but it rains often from June to October. In a very rare moment in 1895, it even snowed! People here love seafood and are sometimes called "Jaibas," which means crabs. You might see crab symbols on buses or park benches. You can also eat a large sandwich called a "torta de la barda." This sandwich has over 12 different toppings inside it.
