The city's economy works through international trade with the United States. This trade happens through an agreement called the USMCA. Much of this work happens in factories called maquiladoras. These factories make many different things to be sent north. They produce items like cables, computer products, and textiles. The automotive industry is also very big in Matamoros. Large car brands like Ford, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz have plants here. These plants build car parts and accessories. Before these factories grew, the city relied more on farming.

Matamoros has a long and very active history. It was once a small place for raising cattle. In 1749, thirteen families moved there to start a cattle business. They built 113 different sites for their animals. The city has been part of many different wars. These include the Mexican War of Independence and the Mexican Revolution. It also saw events during the Texas Revolution and the American Civil War. Because it defended itself during these times, it earned a special title. Its official name is now Heroica Matamoros, which means "Heroic Matamoros."

During the American Civil War, the city changed very quickly. It started as a sleepy little border town. However, the Port of Bagdad soon became a major commercial center. Many people came to trade cotton during this time. In 1865, the town had grown to about 30,000 people. This was a huge change from having only six ships a year. Sadly, the port faced hard times after the war ended. A large hurricane in 1889 also caused a lot of damage. These events made the economy go through a difficult period.

Today, the climate in Matamoros is semiarid. This means the summers are hot and humid. The winters stay mild and are not too cold. People in the city enjoy special celebrations every February. They hold the Charro Days and the Sombrero Festival. These are two-nation fiestas for both the U.S. and Mexico. They help people remember the shared heritage of both countries. It is a place where history and modern industry live side by side.
