Many people live here, with a population of 720,848 people.

Life in Torreón changed because of how people used the land. At first, the area was a place for ranching and raising animals. Later, people used irrigation to bring water to the dry soil. This allowed them to grow lots of cotton. The city became a major center for farming and processing that cotton. Today, the economy uses many different industries. People work with metals, textiles, and chemicals. There are also many large companies like Peñoles and Lala that do business here.

The history of the area goes back a very long time. Archaeologists found that people lived there around the 10th millennium BC. Much later, a Spanish mission arrived in 1566. The city we know today grew during the era of Mexican independence. It was named after a "Torreón," which means a big tower. This tower was built to watch for floods from the Nazas River. A new railroad connected the city to El Paso in the United States. This caused the population to grow very fast. In 1892, there were only 200 people, but by 1910, there were 34,000.

Torreón has seen many important events in its past. During the Mexican Revolution, the city was taken over more than once. A famous general named Pancho Villa was one of the leaders who took the city. In 1911, a sad event called the Torreón massacre happened. During this time, 303 Chinese immigrants were killed by revolutionaries. The city also became an official city in 1907. It recently celebrated its 100th year as a chartered city in 2007. This was marked by many cultural events for the people to enjoy.
